Medical Coding is a hybrid course that meets via Zoom every Monday from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. It includes set assignments, due dates, and expectations outside of scheduled meeting times. This course is the first step toward obtaining the AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.
Medical coding covers ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, Medicare/Medicaid billing, and coding procedures. Training focuses on converting medical services, procedures, and diagnoses into numeric codes based on information found in a patient's medical record. These codes are essential for reimbursement from third-party payers and for providing statistical data for research and development.
After certification, job opportunities may include coding positions in physician offices, staffing agencies, and other healthcare settings.
Prerequisites: Students must have successfully completed Medical Terminology (AHS527) and Fundamentals of Anatomy (AHS569). The recommended follow-up course is the AAPC Coding Course.
