The Sterile Processing Technician Program is a 153-hour course completed over 14 weeks. Sterile processing professionals play a critical role in patient safety by cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and managing surgical instruments and medical equipment used throughout healthcare facilities.

Program Purpose
This course prepares students to:
  • Reprocess, decontaminate, disinfect, sterilize, and distribute medical instruments.
  • Understand microbiology, infection control, and sterile processing principles.
  • Prepare for the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) Exam.

Funding:  This program is eligible for Career Pathways Scholarship (CPS) funding for qualified students. CPS may cover up to 90% of enrollment and book costs.  Students are responsible for remaining 10% before registration can be completed.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must:
  1. Be at least 18 years old.
  2. Have a high school diploma or GED.
  3. Possess a valid driver's license or state-issued ID and reliable transportation.
  4. Have an active email address and internet access.
  5. Meet academic readiness requirements through:
    • College-level Math and English coursework, or
    • A college entrance exam, or
    • ACT WorkKeys Career Readiness Assessment scores of:
      • Applied Math: Level 3
      • Graphic Literacy: Level 4
      • Workplace Documents: Level 4

  1. Comprehensive background check from Premier Biotech

Clinical Externship Requirements
Prior to enrollment, students must submit:
  • 10-panel drug screen from Premier Biotech
  • 2-step TB skin test (or QuantiFERON blood test)
  • Proof of MMR and Varicella immunity (vaccinations or titers)
  • Tdap vaccination within the last 10 years
  • Hepatitis B immunity (vaccinations, positive titer, or signed declination)
  • Flu vaccine
  • Completion of required Learning Hub modules
The clinical externship is completed at the end of the program approximately over two weeks, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Program format:
The course is delivered in a hybrid format, combining online instruction, virtual learning, and in-person lectures/labs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Barton Campus in Greenville, SC. Weekly online testing requires access to a computer with internet, audio, and webcam capabilities.  Classroom, lab, online learning:  87 hours; clinical externship 66 hours; total course 153 hours

Certification Exam:  Students must sit for the HSPA CRCST certification exam upon course completion. The exam is scheduled through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association for a fee of $140.
