Federal and state regulations require specific training for personnel involved in asbestos management. This 5-day NIOSH 582 Equivalent course covers the OSHA training and SC-DHEC licensing requirements for asbestos air monitors. Students will learn NIOSH-approved methods of collecting and evaluating airborne asbestos samples in occupational settings. The course includes statistics and sampling-related mathematics, calibration of air sampling equipment, and set-up and use of the phase contrast microscope. It is helpful if students have a good background in basic algebra and the ability to use a calculator with square and square-root functions. Hands-on exercises complement the practical instruction on asbestos air sample analysis. Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate that may be used for licensing purposes.
This course may be used for licensing as an asbestos abatement professional in SC and NC, and other states with reciprocity agreements.
You must bring your Phase Contrast Microscope set up for asbestos analysis, or rent a scope for the class. Your microscope must have a Walton Beckett G-22 graticule, and your setup kit must include a green filter, a centering telescope, and an HSE/NPL slide for microscope calibration. It is suggested that you also bring your own slide prep kit and stage micrometer if available.
